Spreading the word through talks/workshops at existing groups

JN Jez Nicholson Public Seen by 355

The recent AGM + guesting at the Open Data Manchester Meetup worked well. We spread the word about OSM without the effort of booking a venue, drumming up attendees, providing refreshments, etc. The Directors suggested that to increase exposure for 2018-19 we should find other groups (ODI Nodes, Open Data/Programming/Data Visualisation/User Experience) and do guest appearance talks and workshops tailored to their niche.

My questions are: a) do you think it's a good idea? b) any suggestions of groups? c) what are the down sides? d) should we publish a workshop syllabus/outline/materials so that others can present one? e) other ideas

(a) Yes definitely

(b) Urban exploration / Simple walk meetups / Local history / "Friends of" local park groups .... Good to get groups who are way beyond OSM's stereotypical GIS/hacker type interests

(c) The retention rate (from an OSM point of view) might be low, but I think that's counterbalanced by the benefits of spreading the word and the open approach widely.

(d) No need to present a "syllabus" really, but good to have simple outlines from other people. e.g. from last weekend, Gregory's intro was a nice 20min overview, and the "mapping" walks were quite whimsical and not purely OSM-centric, which meant we didn't actually spend any time trying to teach everyone iD, just gave them a flavour of mapping from collaborating with others.

I drafted a presentation a while ago -- haven't found an ideal venue to present it in yet.
But I thought it might be good to try to tailor it to the local audience -- so being based in Bristol or thereabouts, this is what I came up with: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/13rhPViqJzwTQ9jrfBB-iX04FoHmVwbASZh2c04lHhoU/edit?usp=sharing

Be kind :-)

Here is my OSM workshop for a data visualisation group. The structure is:

  1. Grab attention: "Steve Coast is the new Phyllis Pearsall"
  2. Your first edit: small edits for groups of one-or-more to do
  3. Biases: how data is collected affects how you use it
  4. What is a map?: use cases for visualising geodata
  5. Design challenge game: pick random situation cards and design a map

I appreciated Adam's observation/compliment that me and Brian made a good double-act (not originally planned). I did a talk of an intro/explanation. After the group surveying adventures, I came back and Brain had a crowd around him as he showed how the editing was done. I'd happily repeat that setup again.

I've now worked out why the "notes" feature wasn't working for slides on my computer. I intend to put them online shortly, I'll also upload others from talks I do this year.

Hi, I'll get involved in spreading the word if you want. Only been in OSM and mapping since Jan 2018. I am tho an IT instructor so used to talking and leading people along a journey. I spoke for the Giraffe group in Manchester - you may recall.
Groups who may be interested - possibly Ramblers - formely Ramblers Association. their website uses OSM although their comments are more focused to OS maps. Suspect they may be very interested as they are into rights of way, Mapping ROW's and confirming ways and tags may give additional meaning to their walks - especially with tracing and photo opportunities.
Syllabus & outline - suggest need two or three presentation, based on mixes of vision, skills to map, technology to be used, armchair mapping, - really give as much or as little as any of the groups want.

Not many votes, more people in the discussion, but all positive.

We encourage individual OSM UK members to present a talk about mapping and using OSM data to an existing group.

OSM will be of interest to many diverse existing groups. They are often keen to have guest speakers, plus they will handle all the logistics.

We will publish outlines to assist creating a talk.

Success is: 10 (?) talks before 2019 AGM

Aim 3: "Promote and facilitate the use of OpenStreetMap data by individuals and organisations in the United Kingdom."

I'm not expecting many people to want to present talks, but your input can make it easier for those who do

I am an IT Trainer so I can review outlines and content as part of a quality check.

I gave an OSM intro talk very recently and shared the slides today: http://harrywood.co.uk/blog/2018/06/05/space4-openstreetmap-talk/

I wonder what are the most useful kind of "materials" for OSM uk to provide? I often share my slides like this, in the hope that someone will re-use some or all of them to give as a presentation elsewhere, but as far as I know, that's never actually happened :-( But then I can't feel too bad about this because I also have never used other people's slides! Maybe others feel the same way, that it's generally better to craft your own message, and tell the story your own way. I certainly use other people's images (particularly photos) either found on other slide decks, or just on flickr etc.
