Shoestring Art Challenge

RDB Richard D. Bartlett Public Seen by 319

Sunday 8th November - Monday 16th
Exhibition

"Dear Concerned Citizens,

My name is Yana Brewster and I am the organiser of the Shoestring Art Challenge, a free- entry art exhibition. This is a new event which is directly affiliated with the Shoestring Theatre Challenge run by my sister, Pachali Brewster.
Our group is looking for a venue for our first exhibition, from Monday 9th – Sunday 15th November, and we are interested in your space at 17 Tory St. Please consider our proposal.

Introduction

Our aim is to put on a free-entry art exhibition, one displaying a variety of works from four or five artists. Works may include objects, paintings, video works and performances.

Objectives

The Shoestring Arts Challenge is to be an accessible art exhibition where participating artists spend no more than $20 to create work for the show. It will run for one week, commencing with an opening night. The artworks will be available for sale. Further events and workshops are also possible.

Logistics

We intend to undertake the installation and curation of the artworks ourselves, including gallery sitting if need be. The noise level will not be disruptive, and any artworks requiring sound will keep it at a sensible level. We may need access to lights or a projector, and intend to hang works on the walls using nails unless there is another option. Ideally we would like to use as much space that is available for the exhibit.

Ethics

If the works presented have themes suitable only for an adult audience, we will present a sign or blurb alongside the artwork or in the exhibition catalogue to state this.

Why 17 Tory St?

17 Tory St is known as an arts, community and “activist” space, and so shares the same aims as the Shoestring Art Challenge, which is to make the arts inclusive and accessible to the wider community.

Dates Proposed

We would like to have access to the space from Sunday 8th November - Monday 16th, to allow time for set up and pack down. The exhibition will be open from Monday 9th– Sunday 15th November, with the opening event kicking off at 5:30pm. We plan to stage events or workshops on Wednesday evening, Friday morning and Saturday morning.

Proposed access times:

Sunday, 8/11/15: 10am - 5pm
Monday, 9/11/15: 10am – 9pm
Tuesday, 10/11/15: 10am -5pm
Wednesday, 11/11/15: 10am - 8pm
Thursday, 12/11/15: 10am - 5pm
Friday, 13/11/15: 10am - 12pm
Saturday, 14/11/15: 10am - 12pm
Sunday, 15/11/15: 10am - 5pm
Monday, 16/11/15: 10am - 5pm

Questions

Would we have access to a projector?
Do you have any seating?
How do you usually hang artworks?
What is the maximum capacity of attendees?
What other furnishings are available?

Conclusion

Thank you for your consideration; if you have any questions or concerns regarding the project please contact me at [email protected], or by phone on 021 111 9901.

Best regards,

Yana Brewster"

I'm going to make this thread public so we can share it as an example for how to do 17 Tory St right!

We could get a little tub of Polyfilla to keep in the space. Super easy to just smush it into the holes after the show is over.

The sand it down and colour match with the white... who knew there were so many shades of white and cream?

Do you know the name of the shade of the wall paint? Perhaps 17 Tory St could have a little post-exhibit kit with the polyfilla and test pots matching the wall colour, etc, if... you had the funds. Or you could charge a nominal amount for exhibits that use the kit?

@pachalibrewster The Wednesday night is fine - I've talked with the other group and they don't need it.

@pachalibrewster One of the proposals to use the space was already filled up with a project proposed a month ago for LitCrawl. See the calendar here: http://concernedcitizens.co.nz/ for November

The art challenge on the Friday and Saturday of the 13th/14th clash with other events. It's fine to have the art on the walls then, but there will be a rather large event on at the same time so the workshop wont be able to take place then. Any way we can schedule it for another day?

@murdoch I've just spoken to Yanapun, and it's fine to cancel the Friday and Saturday workshop events. We booked them in case artists wanted to use the space for something specific to their work, but so far none of the artists need it. I'll remove the Fri/Sat event from the Calendar.

At this point we'd like to reserve the Wednesday night workshop just in case, but if anyone else would like it, we are happy to relinquish the timeslot.
