Should We Get Active Connecting And Supporting Freelancers In OuiShare Universe?

BJM Bernie J Mitchell Public Seen by 188

Brothers and Sisters Of OuiShare,

This is a call to action for us to connect the 'freelancers and independent economic agents' within the OuiShare Universe.

My proposal is to support the European Freelancers Week and then get active in the European Coworking Assembly to find ways to connect people, projects and coworking spaces in and around the OuiShare Universe.

We have collected so much information about working independently, how to run our own business and work with bigger organisations.

We need to share this knowledge to become sustainable agents ourselves and both help and learn from other people

In the next few weeks, there is the European Freelancers Week and then a group of us will go to Coworking Europe in Dublin with the Copass gang.

We have over 35 OuiShare Radio podcasts on "Brave New Work" about coworking and freelancing here: https://goo.gl/XeXiGb

The best way to help people is to connect with people already doing this work.
(Starting something new would duplicate good work others are already doing.)

If you are already acting, thinking, doing, organising conversations around this get in touch with me!

My proposal again:
To support the European Freelancers Week and then get active in the European Coworking Assembly to find ways to connect people, projects and coworking spaces in and around the OuiShare Universe. Are You In?

Questions, challenges, ideas and ruckus making welcome!

Hey Bernie! What exactly do you mean by getting active with the "European Coworking Assembly to find ways to connect people, projects and coworking spaces in and around the OuiShare Universe"?

This is the right Loomio post for connectors to vote on Manel - https://goo.gl/gGAn8g ;-)

We are doing things like this: https://goo.gl/B6og7L

And the rest is long the lines of what Jeannine said:

Coworking and Ouishare have been flirting with each other for years now. Our values are aligned if not idenrical and the overlap is great. I think it's time we went on a date.

We can hold hands over the Freelancer's week, take a walk on the boardwalk, maybe win a teddybear at Coworking Europe.Freelancers are only a part if coworking but they are an important part.

I would really love to connect with the do-ers of Ouishare and start to connect up your projects and make new ones with coworking.

Have a remarkable day

hey @berniejmitchell , I fully support this idea in general, but a few more details would be great. When you say formal partnership, what does it include? What is expected from us, and will you be the contact managing the partnership? It's a little hard for me to vote when the engagement is not exactly clear :).

@berniejmitchell same question as @francesca . I like the idea and the world of coworking, coliving, etc... yet what's the proposed beyond crossparticipation & crosspromotion in events, media posts, etc.?

I have the impression that Bernie is hoping to sort out the details after getting a general approval from the community. The idea is awesome, but yes, when talking about legal and practical issues:

  • is it OuiShare UK that's going to manage the paperwork (when/if we get there), and thus taking the main responsibility for running this relationship? (cc @elenagiroli)
  • I think we should have a committed but rotating team on this, not just one person, before building up very big plans
  • and last but not least, any ideas on how to make it a financed project? I'm thinking EU funds, sponsors, ...

There's also RGCS, a workgroup on collaborative spaces, they're sort of coordinating or aggregating academic efforts on this across Europe, would it be interesting for us to work with them somehow?

I am for the notion of having team involvement; the Assembly is a more formal group than is Ouishare and for structural kinds of parternships I will have to get approval. That said, I raised the possibility at our last general meeting recently and the response was overwhelmingly positive -- and really just as here, was mostly a request for some concrete outlines for the relationship.

Plan is to have some discussion about that at the Coworking Europe Conference, when most of the Assembly will be physically present and not distracted.

I do think that coworking generally needs to turn outwards much more than we do; our focus has been inwards as a community for a long time but it is high time we changed that. So not, what is coworking, but what place does coworking have in the sharing economy, in the startup culture, in the freelance movement? What is our role in the future of work?

@francesca thank you for that link, we are aware of a group of researchers, some of whom are regulars at Cowroking Europe. and have been trying to give some form to that area as well as it is surely time. That was for me a very helpful link in that.

Your field of view is broader than ours, we are about a tiny piece. But we do know a lot about that tiny piece. I think I would liek very much if we could serve as the (or a, I am not particularly territorial :-) ) coworking arm of Ouishare, as it were. .

As we're all redefining 'work' I think it's wise to empower each other. As you know I'm all about connection :)
As a first practical step, Seats2meet definitely wants to facilitate OuiShare events as much as we can. If there are people organizing OuiShare events I can connect them with relevant locations and the S2M ecosystem of freelancers, entrepreneurs, etc. Just let me know :)
