Organising an event for Mott MacDonald (London)

MH Manel Heredero Public Seen by 137

Hello hello!

Yesterday I had a great meeting with one of the directors of Mott MacDonald and the opportunity has come up to organise an event for them to launch a new Community of Practice (Data Science). The idea here is to organise a two-day event in pure OuiShare fashion to infuse a sense of collaboration and community into this new group (150 people).

I describe the opportunity in detail in the document below, and I would like to check with all of you that this lead and this company are ok with us, and please let me know if you are interested in being part.

Look forward to hearing from you!

@manel2017 great to talk you about this here in London today! I like the way you think the project can work by using people from the OuiShare family ;-) I'm in!

Interesting project @manel2017 ; any idea when would be the event ? (to know if it's feasible for me to propose my services or not :-) )

Hi Maud! We haven't discussed the when the event could be. It will depend mainly on when we can do it. If the client gets onboard quickly, we could be looking at Nov/Dec

thanks @manel2017. Difficult for me to commit yet for these dates and I cannot help this month on the proposal. So let's see how it goes and when the date is set and if you need help on designing the collaborative workshops and facilitation at this moment tell me :-)

I've been looking into the document: I think the key missing thing in the proposal is what we want to learn in this first "iteration" of work. I think this needs to go beyond organizing an event. I think we could embrace a structure based on appreciative inquiry (4 phases >> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appreciative_inquiry) where you "engage stakeholders in self-determined change".

In this context this would mean:
- a first phase of discover (what is data science? and who's using data science already in our organization?) + dream (what's the potential of data science?)

[The DREAM phase could be the one with external "inspirators"]

  • a second one of design (what experiments we want or could take to assess how ds can help us in our real life?)

[This will be the moment of co-creation / facilitation]

  • a third on of doing (after the event, carrying on the experiments and using them as a the core of the COP creation)

Then: I've been carrying on a PDToolkit 2 days workshop a few weeks ago on this very same topic, a company that already has a DS expert group but needs to create a COP simply because you can't drive the adoption of such a tech+approach by centralized bureaucracy (but only favor the condition for this culture to spread at the periphery, supporting the curious in the organization with on-boarding and learning services to help them grow an expertise, putting them in touch with expert mentors, etc...). More than everything you need the strategy to serve the daily needs/challenges and pressures of participants.

This won't be relevant only because the CEO thinks so: it NEEDS to be relevant

Thanks @simonecicero , this is a very interesting approach. I will add it to the 'objective' section of the proposal. Do you have a reference I can use for that work you mentioned?

Super, also I suggest I'm the proposal you mention that we (together) should work out a list of learning objectives for the event ("what do we would like to learn from this iteration?").
