What is happening with the social.coop blog? (I've been writing)

Hello all. I've been very busy with real life as of late, but things have calmed down. My grandfather had been slowly succumbing to dementia and old age. He has since passed on (which is bitter-sweet given his former condition), so I now have the mental bandwidth to focus my energies on productive efforts.

Over the past few days, I have been working on the social.coop wiki [https://wiki.social.coop]! But, as a member of the Editorial Group, I think getting the blog going would be an important step in the right direction. And, it would allow me to provide something of value to the community (over the last year, I have had to admit to myself that I wouldn't make a good developer).

Lately, I have been focusing my efforts on some research that borrows from my knowledge of behavioral, cognitive, and cultural-historical psychology (I was once planning on becoming a doctor of education). I think I can apply that knowledge to many of the issues that concern co-operative governance, internet freedom, and general left politics.

Here is a short article I wrote about Facebook and Cambridge Analytica the other day for a zine that is being distributed on college campuses. It gives a basic overview of my thoughts on social media, social control, and human psychology.

I would like to reopen discussion on the blog and its direction. I feel it is the best way for me to contribute to social.coop.

Sorry to hear about your loss :( Thank you for sharing the article, I'll read it ASAP and let you know.
Also, count me in for the blog!

Sorry for your loss :slight_frown: I've just gotten round to reading the short article. Beautifully written, with a striking hypothetical that really hits the nail on the head! I am also happy to be involved in the blog.

One thing in relation to this I've been thinking is a place to land for some on the stuff on Co-op Watercooler, which was a blog project I participated in for a few years, but ultimately fizzled out. I'm wondering if it would make sense to either migrate some of the articles from there to the social.coop blog and/or if it might make sense for social.coop to take over the brand/domain of the CWC project? Perhaps we should schedule a call on this front once the CoC development process is complete?

Sorry for your loss, hope all the best for you.

I liked the stuff in Co-op Watercooler and think it would be a shame if it would disappear.

Happy to help with articles every month or two, although I am not a native English speaker or have lot of knowledge about coops. Here's an example of an article I've written:

https://www.thepeoplesnewsonline.co.uk/single-post/2018/03/10/banks-for-the-many-reasons-why-co-operative-banks-should-have-our-support/

I wrote a short Finnish blog on cooperatives with 5 articles and have few sketches on cooperative related articles, one which I have promised to do ages ago for Internet Of Ownership blog, but that I want to finish only after reading few related books.

Would like to see and contribute cooperative blog platform that would allow blogging about wider variety of subjects, not just cooperatives.

A fellow named Iwan Doherty runs a news site called The Peoples News (where my blog article was published in). The people running it are very young, many are active in Quora, it's impressive and I wouldn't be surprised if it blew up in exposure massively during next UK general elections.

He has talked about moving into a cooperative ownership model (so far it's not large enough for that to be very relevant). I mentioned social coop to him and recently he joined our instant.

Perhaps we could collaborate with The Peoples News, I can't speak for them but I have contacted Iwan in the past and would be more than happy to propose if people have ideas on collaboration.

I'm all for re-purposing useful material. No reason it should disappear. Keeping an archive of acquired knowledge is vital. I think the domain should just be blog.social.coop for simplicity's sake.

Matt: I like your idea with regard to CWC and would be happy to contribute as I am able and depending upon the new shape and strategic focus of the site. I had posted in a separate thread about a new podcast segment I am starting a bit later this year. Discussing how/if podcasting and other forms of media contributed by our community could be wrapped into this effort is worth exploring in my opinion.

Sounds interesting, I must have somehow missed it and can't find it using search or browsing through the Loomio. Could you link it?

It's in the Outreach thread posted by @matthewcropp https://www.loomio.org/d/n2d07stP/outreach - Not much more detail there than here. Matt had mentioned the idea of a podcast in passing on Masto a while back and I thought it was worth adding to this discussion -- even if a bit aspirational at the moment. General direction of my podcast segment will be cooperative education and awareness for credit union employees. In my experience here in North and South Carolina, credit unions and other co-ops are largely siloed from one another.

Also remember, we created a Social Coop member for the P2P Foundation blog and stories can be mirrored there. @lehighcommunalist I can republish your article there but, guys, please make use of it. (i can't remember who had the log in @mayel perhaps? If anyone is interested, please write to me)
