ECA London JULY 2018 - Tate Modern - Tate Exchange

TK Torange Khonsari Public Seen by 27

Dear all We have been talking with Nicole and David from European Commons Assembly that we can host the next Urban/cultural Commons gathering in London in 2018. We are a grassroots organisation called public works www.publicworksgroup.net. A collective that are trying to implement Commons in neighbourhoods in the tough global city of London. We were invited to become associate partners at Tate modern and Last year at the Tate we launched "The Civic University"as part of an institutional critique of universities as well as being a new initiative which is to support construction of urban and cultural commons through knowledge sharing and debates on civic values. The number of audiences was astonishing (2800 people in 8 days). Although we understand the problematics of an establishment such as the Tate, we thought its a great platform for us to meet and spread and share the ideas of Commons, with the international audience the Tate attracts. We also have spaces in community projects we are involved in which we can host other events. These spaces are obviously more local and specific to communities. It would be great to hear if this is something everyone thinks is a good idea. If so we can start planning and involve whoever is interested in developing what the 1-2 days at the Tate could become to support the Commons movement. Also we have links with lots of local projects, schools, Local authorities, universities, UN Habitat and the London Mayors office (GLA) etc etc so if we all think these connections are helpful then we can also think about inviting them. Look forward to hearing from you all.

London would be for sure a interesting and challenging location. How has been your experience so far working with the tate? Is there a genuine interest in learning about the Commons from the institutional side?

Hi Oliver thanks for your comment. I don't think the Tate knows very much about the commons. I am not so sure our energies are best served trying to get the institution to think differently but rather engage with the numerous public who come to the Tate to make them aware of the commons and get them to spread the word. However they have asked us to be associates so they are very curious.

I agree that Tate Modern would allow for an effective outreach. The museum in itself is probably a split institution, on one side it has this educational outreach side which is perhaps a bit Commons leaning, to allow anyone access to artistic experiences etc. but on the other hand it is steeped into the corrupt system of the commercial art market that is completely opposed to the idea of the Commons since it is based on private ownership of art works and operating with artificial scarcity and market hype.

In any case I very much support your suggestion. I think it is a good idea to combine working with the tate for outreach purposes one one hand with actual collaborations with local initiatives on the other.

What are your next steps? How do you want to proceed? And can we help in one way or the other with the preparations?

Thanks for this, Torange. It sounds like an excellent proposal. Do you have any documents you could forward about this? We are currently in Villarceaux talking about the longer-term sustainability of the ECA, and it would great to include more about a possible event in London.

I think it may be worth having a face to face meeting between @oliverkalleinen, @torangekhonsari (well, Andy since he will be there), @davidhammerstein @ivorstodolsky and others that have taken part of this conversation so far in person in Madrid. I would appreciate it if one of you could take the lead in finding a time outside of the program and let me know.
