Hey folks, I think we need to start discussing what the process is for selecting the next FOSS4GNA location and organizers. Let start off by brainstorming.
Please respond to this email with the way you think the selection process should occur. Once we have all shared our ideas we can have a kick off meeting to discuss this and begin working on 2021.

Hi all,
My two cents;
- have conference call to sync on who is to write a draft Call for Interest/Proposal/other term.
- determine our conditions
- publish concept and get feed back from committee and finalise
- publish/broadcast etc
- wait ...
Vriendelijke Groet/Kind regards,

Approach to selecting next event Closed Thu 30 Jan 2020 3:03PM
Hey folks,
Jody has suggested two potential ways to select the next location and I would like to get others to input on this. Please vote and feel free to write any other feedback about this, as you see fit.
Here are the two options in short:
Solicit bids from hotels and conference centrers
shortlist and select based on a balance between vendor costs and travel costs for attendees.
Solicit bids from competing LOC teams
open invitation, starting with those who have expressed interest in the global event

I like the way that this is done with the global event. I don't know how sustainable this is?

Am I right in understanding that this approach is the one which has been used commonly in the past?

I definitely vastly prefer the solicit bids from LOC teams as I think they lead to much better events with far more of a local feel and have the side effect of helping to build local communities. That being said, I agree with Guido's sentiment questioning the stability. I'd love to see a hybrid where we look for communities that have interest, but rather than having them bid, we have them work with us to help with bids from hotels and conference centers so that the "buy in" for a local team is much lower.

Bitner,
Awesome feedback, can you please use the loomio polling tool to make it clear that is your position. :)

Hah, I didn't vote because I felt that my opinion split the difference and didn't fit either option!

I prefer to have LOCs to bid. It shows commitment, whereas otherwise we have to assemble an LOC and keep it motivated. Skin in the game!

I prefer LOC from a community feel point of view (and that got my vote). I figure it is a risk (not many activities/motivated groups), and not great fit for outreach (hard to go new places), ...
But totally a risk I am willing to take :)

I would like to gather folks that a commitment to foss4g on the continent. Was thinking by starting with OSGeo chapters, GIS groups, Universities ... that have held a regional event on open source mapping technologies. This would allow folks like CalGIS, or Red Cross, to take part, .. , and would exclude some of the smaller OSGeo chapters that just meet for “GeoBeers”.
There seems to be two good approaches:
a) separate venue from organizing team,
solicit bids from hotels and conference centres, shortlist and select based on a balance between vendor costs and travel costs for attendees.
b) accept bids from competing teams (open invitation, starting with those who have expressed interest in the global event).
My priorities are on outreach and strengthening our community, so I really want to hear from everyone here.
