Sunstone Pirate Think Tank Project

AR Andrew Reitemeyer Public Seen by 221

PPI has taken over plans to set up an international think tank for Pirate based policy and philosophy. The idea is to provide expert advice to parties when requested as well as providing generic policies that can be adapted to suit local conditions and cultures.

This proposal was mostly supported; consensus-1

We could use Sunstone to advise on polices that are beyond the normal scope of Pirate principles. E.G foreign policy, immigration etc.

Won't necessarily be relevant to NZ, neither is it wise to broaden at a too rapid pace.

International Think tank will be great for subjects that go beyond borders, Climate, Migration, Energie, Conflict and much more.

In general I'm feel excited about such prospect. But some more information would be useful.

How would Sunstone be funded?
Would using their services imply costs?

The Think Tank will be funded initially by a crowd funding effort and then by regular subscriptions. There would be no cost for Sunstone services.

Apologies for my absence over the past few weeks. I took some time off to cool my heels a bit, so I wasn't able to give my position on the proposal, but since it's a straw poll rather than a specific, binding decision, I'll just add my thoughts here.

I think having the best minds across the Pirate movement come together to harvest the best of our collective wisdom is a brilliant idea. I appreciate David's note of caution, but I believe we're talking about a shared knowledge based we could contribute to, as well as drawing from, and as Andrew R said, anything used locally would have to be filtered through our own policy process and adapted for local needs.

Could SunStone be another opportunity to beta test the GITocracy/ PolicyHub software concept? Banjo and I have been busy moving house, so there hasn't been any coding work done yet. However, I did do a search for existing free code projects along similar lines, and found quite a few, some of which could be adapted, for our needs rather than starting from scratch. So if we get focused, we might be able to come up with something quite fast.

I could be used to facilitate such testing as it would function as a policy repository as a part of its remit. But decisions like that will be up to an administrative board that has yet to be created.

One thing I think SunStone could really help us with, if it existed today, is how to respond to the DotCom case. This is an issue of international importance, considering the precedents it could create for fascist copyright enforcement across borders, and the more informed minds contribute to any public statements we make about it, the better. I don't want to hijack this thread about SunStone, so I will go into more detail about DotComGate in its own thread in the Comms subgroup.

That is exactly the sort of thing that it could deal with as this is not as clear cut as a whistle blower - however it involves copyright law and safe harbour provisions across legal jurisdictions.
