A Forest Garden in a Box

DU Deleted account Public Seen by 116

Ever since the idea first came up in Manchester at our second ever meeting I’ve felt excited about this. We have in Rosie a hugely experienced project manager who’s worked for years in innovation giving her time to guide us. She has produced a design brief which by the AGM will give us a ‘prototype’ to see and touch. A design team of volunteers will be invited to form who will then turn this into the finished article, taking on feedback from us all, ready to launch early next year.

Proudly announcing our (soft) launch today our Forest-Garden-in-a-Box with the Hulme Community Garden Centre in Manchester. All of you lovely people in or near Manchester do consider buying a voucher for a friend/loved one to give as the perfect climate-resilient Christmas gift. To be picked up on potato day Feb 16th, ready to plant. Or please share this news with all Manchester connections! Thank you 🙏

I just had a quick look on the Hulme garden centre website and on ours - couldn't find anything about the launch on either. It would be useful to have somewhere to send people. Any suggestions?

Hi TomasWe haven’t yet got an automatic link between the content of our twitter feed
https://twitter.com/natforestgarden/status/1204373740215308289
and the news section on our website.
I’ve copied Nick our brilliant tech support forest gardening volunteer.
@Nick I wonder if you gave me access rights to posting onto our site today could relieve you of an updating chore like this one?
Kath has retweeted our tweet but perhaps Kath you could update your site too?
Best to you all
Paul

Hello all the 'soft launch' of a Forest-Garden-in-a-Box at Hulme Community Garden Centre generated very little interest - which was rather disappointing. But we're not giving up. We have new plans. In two weeks our FGiB team [Jane (Birchfields Park Community FG); Rosie Frost (designer and project manager) and Nick Turner (our lead on all things digital) ] will have a new web page up to help people curate their own Box.

It will be based around the simple guild we launched last year in Manchester but with variants: for lockdown balconies, as well as for community spaces, and schools. People will have as additional resources: the map of community gardens that Felix put together; a list of nurseries specialising in forest garden products, and a directory of forest garden coaches (ready to provide on-line, and even socially distanced in-person support as a commercial arrangement).

Please let us know if you'd like to be a 'coach'!

And could you help with your favourite nursery(ies)?? On the back of a so far very well attended seminar series (90 people last week) I think we can keep the momentum building and keep our vision alive for forest-gardened UK.

Here's the nursery list we have so far (thanks to @Dave Richards )

Agroforestry Research Trust Live again in July after lockdown

Ken Muir: good range , especially strawberries (French varieties: Mara de bois, Gariguette, Manille):

Pomona: great range of FG plants

Victoriana: grapes, kiwi

Poyntzfield Herb Nursery: amazing catalogue of herbs

Buckingham Nursery: hedging, shuttlecock ferns, elaeagnus

Orange Pippin: brilliant range that they source from Frank Matthews

And I can add Incredible Vegetables .................

Hi Every one,

Paul if you would like to add me to the list of nurseries supplying specialist plants for forest gardens I would be grateful, my June availability list will be up on the website soon. Plus I am available for coaching as well. When movement restrictions are lifted I will be back traveling up and down the county to provide on-site guidance and advice too, hopefully, late summer or early autumn.

Couple of suggestions for @Paul Pivcevic’s nursery list:

  • Backyard Larder - perennial veg, Alison's really helpful

  • Kore Wild Fruit Nursery - heard very good things, plus some hard to get hold of trees eg Raisin Tree

  • Cool Temperate - haven't bought anything from Phil Corbett for a while but remember them being good trees

  • Future Forests - very healthy hedging plants, Berberis & Autumn Olive amongst others. Based in Ireland

  • Fruit and Nut - again, based in Ireland, heard good things

Hi everyone. I would be interested in being a 'coach.' Do you have more information at this stage at what it would involve? All the best Emma
