Connect Services - RedMatrix, Friendica, Gnu Social, etc.

It doesn't look so great to me that the only services we are given the option to connect to are Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter, and Wordpress. Shouldn't we have other decentralized social networks in there as well?

For some services, such as RedMatrix, no plugin is required to start sharing with that network. For others, sharing information between services is not smooth yet.

But in order to facilitate sharing between the myriad other socnets until automated methods take hold, I think we should have 'share' buttons which at least link to information on how to share between services.

RedMatrix and Friendica use the Diaspora-Federation Protocol. I think this is the way sharing should also work with other decentral social networks. There should not be a share-button but the users of other social networks should be able to connect to diaspora-accounts using their native "add friend" / "share with somebody" feature, so the thing feels natural and seemless.

Maybe there is a protocol to adapt or some changes on orther social networks, I don't know... but I don't think we need any change in UI to allow connection of other social networks to diaspora.

@faldrian : Someone mentioned* that one of the major difficulties is not being able to search for people across networks. It's possible to search for someone on a RedMatrix or Friendica server, but you have to have the whole webbie/address. And I don't know if it's possible to share a GNU Social account directly with a diaspora* account. At least, I haven't figured it out yet.

I suppose some intelligent people have already discussed what options we have to implement a user search decentralized across pods and networks...

(I'm thinking of "let others find my profile"-enabled users to be as key/value pairs in a DHT or something... but no further clue here )

I'll emphasize that the easiest way to get Diaspora* connected to all these other services is if we can share a common protocol :)

As such, I think the best way to handle this is to get involved with the W3C Social WG... see this thread:
