Delete our twitter account

  1. Our use of twitter is an endorsement of twitter
  2. We cannot rely on it as a platform for free speech.
  3. There is already documented cases of censorship.
  4. We should be promoting decentralized replacements like mastodon

we cannot criticize status quo without being close to online social media. Thus twitter account is essential, while as @piratekp stated, a leg in mastodon/gnusocial must be there. Transition in mass happens only when there is a gradient.

With the votes tied, although I'm late, the way I solve this issue may be interesting for a possible solution here.

I've also been finding twitter too much of late. Them switching to algorithmic feed by default is fine, but removing the option to view tweets chronologically wasn't. Also a lot of other issues made me want to rethink my twitter account.

I, so, setup a blog with a microblogging theme at https://shares.learnlearn.in/ (which is a domain that I control). I then created IFTTT rules (could as well have been node red, but did not have time) to automatically post things from there to twitter. So, I currently do not post anything directly on twitter. That way I have protected myself from twitter. The same can be setup for mastodon or wherever we want to syndicate to. This is the POSSE strategy. https://indieweb.org/POSSE

Now, that doesn't solve the problem of whether our use of twitter is an endorsement of twitter or not. Actually, we can have it written everywhere on twitter that our use of twitter is not an endorsement of twitter. We can make our cover picture, profile, bio, even have it in every tweet that we don't endorse twitter. I think that should cover the endorsement aspect.

With both these, I think we can still continue to have an account on twitter while avoiding two major issues.

Yet, there can another issue be raised that if we leave twitter it maybe a reason for people to come out of twitter on to better platforms. I think that is a complex argument with a lot of supporting and opposing points.

Poll Created Tue 9 Apr 2019 3:38PM

Schedule deletion of our twitter account after 1 year Closed Tue 23 Apr 2019 4:01PM

Since we did not get a consensus here, I will move this poll to associates sub group. If required, to permanent members sub group as well.

Earlier proposal to delete twitter account did not get consensus, so I'm modifying the proposal. 1. We should clearly state in our profile that we do not endorse twitter or support its censorship policies. 2. We should promote decentralized/federated alternatives through our account 3. We should schedule deletion of our twitter account after 1 year and announce it.

But we can have a setup where our mastodon toots are retweeted on twitter, see how FSF does this. https://www.fsf.org/twitter?pk_campaign=social_media

We can use twitter to spread the word about mastodon, @ranjithsiji has mentioned, cleaver techniques can be used to bring people to mastodon through our twitter posts

I think we can take this decision as and when it is ready. May be within one year. May be more time. As and when it is ready to delete.
