loomio vs mailing list

With loomio as a new tool I'd like to discuss how we use it together with the mailing list. I think loomeo is ideal for internal open minded discussion and ideas which might not be polished yet. However in contrast to the mailing list, only invited people can see it, so for stuff that can openly discussed (or even with people only partially affiliated with the team), the mailing list might be better.

Use both Closed Thu 11 Apr 2013

So my proposal would be:
When introducing a new feature or tool, wanting input from others and all kind of random ideas loomio should be used.
For announcements (doing a group rebuild/update) the mailing list should be used. I'd also think that proposing people for TU/packager/maintainer should be made there, so the affected one knows about how we're deciding.
If in doubt about where to discuss, ask some people in IRC.

I'm currently neutral on my own proposal, as I think it's too vague in some parts and needs your input.

Loomio is a closed source web service and is terribly slow (at least for me). I think IRC + ML are enough.

I think it’s too soon to ditch it. If you raise the question again in some months, then I might change my opinion.

Let's use it when it suits us (as Inkane suggested), and we see where that takes us.

I prefer this to make noise for taking just simple actions.

Simple, graphical, and one see decisions.

Loomio will survive forever? I don't know, but is a good idea.

Seems good to me so far, but it is one more thing to worry about.

Better and clearer for discussing ideas.

Loomio is free software, as free as it gets in my opinion: AGPL: https://github.com/loomio/loomio/blob/master/LICENSE.txt

And I think it could be a great tool for decision taking since it allows to easily see what each person’s position is at a glance.

But I think it is too soon to decide either way. I think we should try this during a couple of months to decide whether we keep using Loomio or stick to the current tools.

And, in any case, we will continue using both the IRC and the mailing list, Loomio is meant for group decision taking, which won’t render mailing lists and IRC channels useless.

Just some facts to have in mind:
1) Loomio is still in closed testing, but I guess it will open sooner or later for all.
2) It's still a first release, I expect it to have some glitches here and there, but also gain more features as it grows.
3) As Adrian pointed out, its a FLOSS project.
4) The group discussions and votes are open for anyone to read. Of course only those accepted in the group can vote.

Loomio can be a good place to hash out ideas and brainstorm before the community at large gets involved. It would be beneficial (and inline with the open source world's belief in transparency) that the basics of an idea are hashed out here, and then get announced on mailing list where the community at large can voice their opinions (and change the plans if necessary). Of course day-to-day decisions that don't affect the users don't need to go to the mailing lists (I.e. should become an official Chakra Dev?)
