Livestream or Skype? Room for Higher Bandwidth Dialogue?

JG john gieryn Public Seen by 350

Thought I'd lift out @magentaceiba 's idea into a new thread:
> I'd like to convene a panel discussion on filter bubbles via Bloom Network's webcasts soon.

Curious if folks have energy or interest for
1) a simple video chat amongst people here, or
2) reaching out to some subject matter experts (SMEs) and get them on a panel of sorts so we can pick their brains/ use it as an impetus for community conversation. Could be relatively lightweight?

I have some energy in this realm after the relative success of the #BuyTwitter panel I co-organized; we (Maira Sutton of Shareable and Matt Cropp of VTEOC.org) may still be interested/ aiming to do a follow-up to that on the governance & operations required for a social media network at scale, even though the #BuyTwitter campaign is dieing down & transitioning into a less-public effort to build a Platform Acquisition Co-op.

@craigambrose, do you have any energy for in-person/ synchronous dialogue in the upcoming month or two?

I am available and am looking forward to participate.

Two technical comments in relation to communication tools
* I am a no-google user so anything that happens there is out of my reach.
* I am on Ubuntu so can only do Skype audio conference (no video)
* Many browser based online videochat tools do not work on Ubuntu
* Zoom does but free version is limited to 40 minute group talks

jitsi and appear.in both work on Ubuntu, but jitsi has been flaky lately.

Also- in terms of agenda- I also want to amplify @magentaceiba's points (in the Intro Thread) about dynamic facilitation; how does the curation/ admin/ self-organizing protocols of a social media platform lend itself to quick solutions in the networks we already use? Would others be interested in having that piece as part of the discussion?

Yes, that's highly pertinent. If I participate, I won't have much positive feedback on that, because I think that social media tools are terribly weak for deliberative discussion and decision-making. They'll get better. (I honestly think that social media is still in its infancy.)

Part of my proposed solution (Wikipedia for Debates) is meant to tackle exactly the question of deliberative discussion and decision-making. I consider it a "missing piece" of the internet, and see it as a new structure for communication that changes a lot of the common patterns and incentives that we see (the same way Twitter, Facebook and Google+ all have different models of conversation). I can explain more if you're interested.

Sure. Explain more. Or, got anything to look at? More details of the idea, specs, design, code, demo?

I'm working on a demo, but only in my spare time right now, with 1 other developer. The final product (it's open source) would be quite complex, but have to have a simple interface.

Here's a write-up of some of the elements of a debate, as I see them: https://medium.com/@bigokro/should-we-dump-the-electoral-college-anatomy-of-a-debate-b48b4aa5e3#.qj6zkzocb

As for decision-making, the site would provide 2 things: trust in information, and a clear view of the trade-offs (either in real terms, or in terms of personal values). Here's one hint at that: https://medium.com/@bigokro/keeping-donald-trump-and-ourselves-honest-c5e68eb052e7#.1ljghvaer
