Scoop Radio

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Scoop could provide New Zealanders with a real public news radio station? One that would give us a welcome alternative to Radio New Zealand and commercial talk back stations.

No doubt a big ask with the resourcing that this would need. But on the other hand, isn't this how pirate stations started in the 70s and ended up making a big difference?

You could just get a robot to read out press releases one after the other as they come in!

Joking aside, I'm not sure about the idea of a whole radio station, but perhaps podcasts could be an interesting way to approach this?

Nice idea. Could be internet / streaming radio rather than the infrastructure of transmitters etc...

I just had a look at the "About Us" section in Scoop and it states that it is not a news site as such. Although people like me see it as an important news source filling the gap of unbiased good quality journalism that has gone missing from our media, and looking at the result of the survey it is clear that a large number of people indeed use it as a news site. So certainly a question whether Scoop wants to change its purpose in life and fill the gap for good web- and radio-based news?

Btw, podcasts work for a small number of people only, and certainly not something that people would listen to when they wake up to their radio alarm clock in the morning.

As an educator, spoken word is a valid medium for knowledge exchange ...

Interestingly, today I noted that the Listener chose to celebrate on its front cover, the role 'spoken word' has for early childhood development ...

So, for these and many more reasons (including Peter Sloterdijk's view on the impact of oralcy on shared space) I'm an advocate for spoken word digital content ...

As a digital thinker ... i suggest there are more degrees of freedom with digital audio, than experienced with analog radio ... ie digital reaches bigger audiences than analog radio can ...

But, where digital can learn from 20th century analog media (including print) ...

is more to do with the power of [ scheduled ] content ...

as opposed to any perceived power of the actual content ...
