About "OpenMandriva Lx" Definition

RJ Raphaël Jadot Public Seen by 451

Hello,

We need a clear definition of OpenMandriva Lx (what it is, the goal etc)

This is not a motto (we already have one: "A pinch of Community, a pinch of Passion, a pinch of Innovation, flavoured with fun")

This is neither the definition of the association by itself (described in our statutes, and voluntarily vague for being able to be flexible)

This is really about the linux distribution by itself. We need first a simple "about" phrase (or maybe two) understandable by anybody, an objective easy to follow. This sentence is very important because we will clearly define what we are planning to do with it (And maybe we don't all have the same idea). It will be on front page of our websites, and media pages (facebook, g+, etc)

This will have to be approved by all the members, but I suggest to start gathering ideas, coming from TC, cooker, all the other teams and pods.

@raphaeljadot Where will this description be? How will it be used?

@joaoazevedopatricio1 everywhere :) Websites, social media etc. It describes the OMLx project exaclty.

@raphaeljadot this is my phrasing suggestion: "OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users."

I have no problems using the Mandriva name I just believe that having a name like "OPENMANDRIVA" is quite enough. It's a "eternal tribute"... People are not really stupid and find the match, but like I said I'm ok with this all.

@joaoazevedopatricio1 you've got a point there :D

So the two options would be then:

  • OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.

Or

  • OpenMandriva Lx is a free Desktop Operating System aimed to provide a wonderful user experience! It offers a simple, stable and modern GNU/Linux distribution, user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.

Yep, Joao's point is valid but my sense is that mentioning the Mandriva legacy thing will make it more clear that we're actually carrying forward the good work of Mandriva, so people do not think OpenMandriva is just a community [test] initiative of the corporate entity Mandriva .

That is, I think it'll help to make it clear that Mandriva is dead and OM is trying to move it forward.

I'll wait this week-end so that intersted people can join loomio, and then make the second proposal.

I'm for the second option. Without Mandriva legacy thing because we're describing our project here and now, and hopefully the future. For the roots, we have history.

Hello, for me, we should not mention Mandriva, in each case the name of the association and distribution are already sufficiently clear.
It is not so difficult to understand that we are a continuation of Mandrake / Mandriva

@davidegaratti @rugyada thanks for input... This is apperently a topic where people are divided. Wdyt if, for example, we keep the reference to Mandriva for, let's say, 1 year and after that we remove reference?
