About "OpenMandriva Lx" Definition

RJ Raphaël Jadot Public Seen by 451

Hello,

We need a clear definition of OpenMandriva Lx (what it is, the goal etc)

This is not a motto (we already have one: "A pinch of Community, a pinch of Passion, a pinch of Innovation, flavoured with fun")

This is neither the definition of the association by itself (described in our statutes, and voluntarily vague for being able to be flexible)

This is really about the linux distribution by itself. We need first a simple "about" phrase (or maybe two) understandable by anybody, an objective easy to follow. This sentence is very important because we will clearly define what we are planning to do with it (And maybe we don't all have the same idea). It will be on front page of our websites, and media pages (facebook, g+, etc)

This will have to be approved by all the members, but I suggest to start gathering ideas, coming from TC, cooker, all the other teams and pods.

...also "the non-profit OpenMandriva Association". I would prefer to say that "it aims to be a operating system developed international to be used by everybody, independent of skills or characteristics of usage". also "it aims to be used, independently of the platform structure or age, for science, development, server, or simply browsing. OMLx aims to be everywhere for everybody on any circumstance."

On one hand - fully agree with you, on the other - could be too early for such vast descriptions (targets)? I mean, I see fully right, what you say, but this is not there yet. May be to keep the definition a bit simpler for now?

@katelebedeff I understand you. Maybe I missed the point of this "description", and thought that it was supposed to be a kind of mission description. For something short and clear you can go for "OMLx is a Gnu/Linux distribution aimed to be free, fun and fabulous good loking! :-)

@joaoazevedopatricio1 the problem with "free software" is that some people may confuse with free as "gratis", and maybe openmandriva Lx could not be considered as totally free (as in freedom)

@raphaeljadot I disagree, but I'm ok with it. the fact is that not all the open-source is free as in free speech (as in freedom) :-) but it's ok for me, I have no will to influence this description in any way, just shot some opinions.

@joaoazevedopatricio1 @katelebedeff @benbullard @anuragbhandari I'm trying something taking in account all you remarks.
OpenMandrivaLx is a Desktop Operating System aimed to be free and and to provide a wonderful user experience!
It continues the legacy of Mandriva Linux by offering a simple, stable and modern Gnu/Linux distribution, very user-friendly yet powerful enough for the most advanced users.

In the first sentence, I use "Desktop Operating System" for people that doesn't know what is Linux. In the second one I use more specific (precise) words. WDYT

About using "Mandriva Linux", while I was unconfortable with it, I think it's normal to be proud of our origins :) Some people follow us because they consider us to be the continuity of Mandriva. At least, for now :)
