Six Capitals

R Rory (FSA) Public Seen by 83

Based on work by Maureen McCulloch (a PhD students researching 'for-purpose' accounting, and a member of the FairShares Association), I have created a new document to support learning in FairShares Labs.

Comments on this (draft) representation / theorisation of 'six capitals' are welcome as a further critique of this will appear on both Maureen's study and a new chapter for a Japanese social enterprise textbook (for Takashi Yamamoto - also a member of this group).

Thanks @chriscook1 I'll read with interest. Also might be worth checking http://creditcommons.net for some deep thinking on a money system for the solidarity economy.

Thanks, Graham

I'm familiar with Matt's work (I first met him re LETS over a decade ago) and also Jem Bendell, and it's pretty good on what I think of as 'people-based' credit based upon our capacity to provide goods and services.

However, the vast bulk of credit (over 2/3 of UK money supply) is embedded (via bank mortgage loans) in productive assets, mainly land & embedded energy, but increasingly in 'smart' IP.

So the key is to integrate within simple risk, cost & surplus sharing protocols/institutions not only people-based (Peer2Peer) credit but also asset-based credit, where discounted prepaid (Peer2Here) £ denominated land use credits (the original form of UK sovereign 'stock' from which the expressions 'tax return' & even 'rate of return' derive) enable currency which is local by definition to be exchanged seamlessly with P2P credit.

In terms of the six capitals stuff, this looks like a potentially useful approach, although, like @a19 I'm not a major fan of diagrams.

We are getting some amazing feedback on the P2P Facebook page about FairShares V3.0. Here’s a sample from a US professor:

“I am still really excited about the progress in this. Organizations really do need better structure to be naturally aligned with stakeholders. I think this model is one of the best I've seen - and I was in a global work group about this very issue at the Academy of Management, a couple years ago. it was called: ‘Alternatives to the Corporation’”.

Thanks Prof!

This is great. Made good progress with James from Loomio who has now secured a lot more products ready to start FairShares companies. This Project is no ordinary Erasmus project - do our outputs get the money and move on to the next project - this is a launch pad for us all to do significantly amazing things

I am going to suggest to the For Good Causes Social Audit team that we try out the 6 Capitals as part of the Statement of Purpose

Cliff - we have a new document/wealth audit tool. After discussion with two members (Maureen McCulloch / Christine Gilligan) we've changed 'capital' to 'wealth' in most cases. The audit tool has been updated accordingly, and the document is now 'Six Forms of Wealth' rather than 'Six Forms of Capital'.

Enjoy!
