How happy are we with Community Validation tool?

R RobJN Public Seen by 37

Hi all. Over on the talk-gb mailing list there has been a lot of discussion about how best to add third party Shell petrol station data to OSM. Based on your feedback Ilya has developed a Community Validation tool [1][2].

Given that one of the core objectives of the UK OSM Chapter is to "promote and facilitate the release by organisations in the United Kingdom of data that is suitable for use in OpenStreetMap" I'd like to get your feedback on this.

  • Is this the sort of tool that people like?
  • Can OSM UK (the company) promote this as good practice for incorporating third party TAGGING data?

Should OSM UK put the community validation tool forward as (one of the) good ways of incorporating third party data? Closed Tue 5 Dec 2017 7:24PM

The focus here is the tool. We will always need checks on the source of the data and that it meets a sensible quality threshold. Also note that this tool is for adding TAGS and the (infrequent) new node. For geometries we would need something else.

Overall Ilya's done a good job. There are minor improvements that can be made / this tool won't always be the best option but as a starting point I'd be happy for OSMUK to use this as an example of one (of many) "good" ways to add 3rd party data.

I've just had a quick play, and I think it looks useful. One critical feature that's missing IMO is a way to record feedback to who-ever is managing the process about issues found with the proposed import values. A free text box to allow the recording of a description of what/why changes were made and/or a rejection reason would be useful I think. Following on from this, a table view of the rejected / corrected entries would be useful I think for anyone reviewing things.
(Also, it wasn't clear to me what happens to the fixme text that's entered. Presumably it will be added to the OSM object if/when the import goes ahead, but it wasn't shown to me when browsing an object I'd previously commented on.)

This gained support at this weeks OSM UK board meeting. In time I will add it to the website. I'm after other examples of good tools that help us in our company aims so please do share your ideas.
