Hi everybody from a New Co-op (needing help)!

THE The Human Exploring Society Public Seen by 131

Hi People!
Our names are Manlio Pertout and Martha Stephens, we live in Fife and we are founders and directors of a new Workers' Co-operative Company called The Human Exploring Society. We established the co-operative at the end of 2020 and at the moment we are just undertaking our first activities (official website and social media channels).
The purpose of our activities is to create instruments and spaces for a Community of People working in the Arts, Science, Journalism and Business who want to offer Energy and share Ideas about worldwide issues related to the Rights of Human Beings and the Rights of the Planet, making them universally understandable, and encouraging people to spread passionate messages and take practical action. Maybe the closest "label" to our project is a media-co-op.
We would love to share experiences and ideas with other Workers Coops and receive suggestions about professionals (accountants, lawyers) who have knowledge about the coops' needs and can help along the way.
We are really happy having found such a big community like this, and specifically we are interested in having a contact with a media coop to better understand how to set some contracts.
We would really appreciate if you could give us some help.
Thank you very much!

Manlio and Martha

Hi @Dave Hollings !
Thank you for this contact. We will get in touch with them; they seem to be very appropriate for our case. Have a nice Sunday! :-)

Co-operative and Community Interest Scotland?

Simon Ball (Blake House) Fri 7 May 2021 10:44AM

Hi Manlio + Martha,

If you're looking for an accountant, Third Sector Accountancy are pretty amazing + a coop: https://www.thirdsectoraccountancy.coop/

There's also the book by Radical Routes on how to set-up a workers coop, which is pretty comprehensive with regards to technicalities: https://www.radicalroutes.org.uk/publicdownloads/setupaworkerscoop-lowres.pdf

If you have any specific issues that you may want to email about, I've been a member of a small media (maybe a simplistic label..!) coop for several years and maybe our origin has similarities with yours, going by your website. I'm on sjb@blakehouse.coop

Hi @Simon Ball (Blake House Coop) !
Thank you very much for your suggestion about the Accountancy Firm.
We'll also get in touch with you privately soon.
Thank you for the offer.

Hi @Simon Ball (Blake House Coop) !
Unfortunately Third Sector Accountancy are not taking on new clients at the moment.
Can you suggest any other name or firm, please?
Thank you for your help!

Andrew Woodcock Tue 11 May 2021 9:10AM

Hi Manlio,

it depends what level of Accounting support you need, but Catalyst
Collective, do end if year accounts, book-keeping etc.

The Human Exploring Society Tue 11 May 2021 9:20AM

Very good, @Andrew Woodcock! I'll contact them to see if they can help Scottish co-ops too.
Thank you very much!

Sounds interesting. What's your business model? Took a look at your website, but I don't understand who your clients will be or what it is that you will be providing in terms of services?

The Human Exploring Society Sun 9 May 2021 10:36AM

Hi @Graham !
Thank you very much for looking at our website!
Our clients will be companies who promote fair-trade and eco-friendly products and services in an ethical manner. We will offer to them our various platforms where they can advertise through different forms (banners, articles, interviews, videos, photos).
At the moment we are focusing on building our team with new members of the co-op, creating insipiring content and gaining readers/followers.
Hopefully we answered your question, but thank you for raising this issue, and you're welcome to highlight any other things of note.
Have a nice Sunday!

Platform 6 curate a collection of co-op related resources that you might find useful.

great stuff @Mark Simmonds (Co-op Culture & Platform 6) - is this creative commons / coopyleft by chance?

Mark Simmonds (Co-op Culture & Platform 6) Tue 11 May 2021 7:01PM

Hi Sam, it's a curated collection and so subject to many different copyrights, although much of it is creative commons being the nature of the co-op beast

Sam Toland Tue 11 May 2021 9:38PM

I meant is the curation itself creative commons (can some copy and past it, in whole or in part, into another format / website) :)

Have a similar list, and tempted to reduce some of this. Can also send Platform 6 some of the Irish links, such as they are.

Graham Wed 12 May 2021 7:06AM

Hi Sam. The list is totally open as far as can recall. Please feel free to add your resource links.

Graham Wed 12 May 2021 7:09AM

And you can copy it and use it elsewhere. We should probably add a CC-BY licence, but for now if you do make a copy a credit would be great.

Sam Toland Wed 12 May 2021 5:02PM

perfect, if we reproduce anything we'll credit. :) thanks for the work on this.

Mark Simmonds (Co-op Culture & Platform 6) Wed 12 May 2021 9:03AM

OK. I think Graham has covered it above. Also please don't send us extra stuff - you can easily add it yourself.
