When/how shall we allow fundraising for other charities?

Currently Dignity platform only allows you to raise money for our launch partner charity Help Refugees. Our vision is for Dignity to enable all kinds of people whether they are rich with money, time or ideas, to contribute that value to whatever charity or 'planet before profit' they choose.

We're launching in London & Brighton with just HR because we want to get one strong success story that will show what's possible by fundraising with Dignity, rather than spreading ourselves thinly across many causes people choose to fundraise for.
It also gives us more capacity to work more closely with HR, build more trust, use their network and better understand their needs. Fortunately we also love them and align massively over a common vision and values but when do we remove this restriction and allow London/ Brighton/ future marketplaces to raise money for other causes?

Considerations

  • How multiple causes will complexify payment pathway
  • Added workload of finding causes' bank details and managing split donations (especially where Hirer & Doer choose different causes)
  • Do we want to limit the number of causes users can split each donation between?

Maybe this is also be the time to discuss how we will 'vet'/approve causes - if we do that at all.

Memorandum Of Understanding

Sending this draft to Help Refugees tonight (10aug18)

Wonder: perhaps making some kind of partnership with Effective Altruists - I think they work to find "effective charities"

Hello! I generally think EA are really cool, I've got a couple of EA coordinator members but haven't found a clear way to partner yet and think a clearer partnership could lie with GiveWell (which I believe is where the EA community gets most of its impact data on the charity work that's most effective per pound.
There's also Guidestar and Charity Navigator.. definitely our long term plan is to partner closely with at least one of them so our users who are passionate about an area of charitable work (such as refugee aid or tackling FGM) and Dignity can instantly show you the charities and orgs that are delivering a response with the highest proven positive impact. I've done a couple a couple of mock ups of how that could look, happy to share. Thanks for the idea! x

I believe a big part of when we diversify the marketplace is going to be when we have funding for a team or org. to process all the various payments.

Bro, since our phone chat about it today, the more I think about it, the more I want to keep diversifying Brighton open as an option in 2018. That (very understandable) impatience you expressed to Help Refugees about pushing back the HR press launch, firstly I share it! (though they have sound reasoning) Secondly I feel the same itch about diversifying Brighton, so yeah, there's a LOT of ifs, but IF legal, tech, demand from causes and team capacity all point toward enabling diversifying Brighton very shortly after HR press launch in Oct, I feel like I could really run with Brighton (with Cath/ who knows who) while you, Meryl, Nicky or anyone who feels super London focused can put attention there.
I'm feel Dignity is really being called into the groundswell of grassroots action around homelessness in Brighton for example, and what a beautiful place to bring our social impact; a community solution to a major challenge so close to home, while in London we're mobilising people around the refugee crisis.
So big it's, and really I just want to hear HR's feelings about us being open to diversifying Brighton before the year is out. I suspect they'd just like to have some idea what diversifying would look like and how it would affect them/ their supporters.

Could be nice to stick a link to our Memorandum Of Understanding here? Do you still like the idea of me doing a call out for a legal expert friend to skim over it before we shoot it over to HR? If yes, then being able to see mine & your conversations about it here might be helpful context for them x

yep, good idea. i dont think we need legal expert looking over it, will only delay things. plus we found it's not legal binding anyway.
