Policy 2: Vision, Mission, Aims

AG Andy Goldring Public Seen by 329

Vision:

A healthy, peaceful and socially just world in which we care for the earth, each other and future generations, in harmony with nature.

Mission:

To work together to enhance the coherence and effectiveness of local to global permaculture networks both formal and informal.

Aims:

  • To provide a collaborative and convivial online space in which to work towards the Co-Lab’s vision and mission;

  • To identify opportunities to enhance the coherence and effectiveness of local, regional, national, continental and global permaculture networks;

  • To research, assess and provide information about the current state and extent of permaculture thinking and practice and its strategic context to enable effective planning, project design and network development;

  • To identify and mobilise resources that support participants to nurture existing initiatives and develop new eco-social enterprises, projects and initiatives that address identified challenges, or add additional value to permaculture networks;

  • To communicate with permaculture networks and allies to ensure wide understanding of the CoLab and active participation from around the world;

  • To make effective links between permaculture and allied networks that enhance our collective work towards our shared visions;

  • To work towards a multi-lingual platform that enables wide participation from across the worldwide permaculture community;

  • To work towards eliminating racism, patriarchy, the class system and any other manifestations of the oppressive society (aka the Patrix) that present major blocks to healthy and diverse participation in both the Colab and the wider permaculture network.

  • To provide and document existing training and learning resources to enable people to participate and work effectively together;

  • To use and document the process of CoLab development to actively learn and unlearn organisational development processes suited to complex multi-layered networks.

Date agreed: 16th September 2017

Review date: Three months after the first meeting of the Permaculture CoLab Stewardship Council.

Hi everyone - this is a big one! it won't be perfect for everyone, and its notoriously hard to describe a succinct vision that works for most people. I offer this in the spirit of 'good enough for now and safe enough to try'. The interim stewardship council would review them after the first three months, so this is to give them an indication of what we have thought so far - they just need to be in the right ball-park! Aiming to finalise the decision (ie move to voting) around the 17/18th July - so 8/9 days for comment. thanks

It is not possible to edit the text in here - and it needs editing - that deadly planning word is back in for a start and, as we all know (Cynefin) planning is not appropriate as the sole process in complex networks ... and what on earth does strategic context mean? Please can we have the Google Doc back ...

See reply on loomio - I should have replied directly - still getting the hang of this!

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LxgcBVZ67Y43-stsrqJEshmQVFF799GGiFBHbRMsS5c/edit is the original doc. I would encourage you to identify the key bullet points you want changing here - if we do a full edit on the google doc my fear is that we will have to start the poll again. If we have the conversation here we can probably agree a modified proposal and continue to voting (like we did for policy 1).

If this is the main one - "To research, assess and provide information about the current state and extent of permaculture thinking and practice and its strategic context so as to enable effective planning and project development;", then my response would be to edit to: "To research, assess and provide information about the current state and extent of permaculture thinking and practice;"

I 'd block this bill for the following reasons.

  1. It does not make any explicit mention of the work relating to the topic of eliminating racism, patriarchy, the class system and any other manifestations of the oppressive society that I consider to be one of the major blocks to a healthy, diverse participation in both the Colab and the wider world permaculture network. We've discussed this before, several times and yet it regularly goes missing in action.

  2. The role of the Colab in providing support resources to enable people to make more and better permaculture livelihoods is another core piece of our thinking that does get a mention but appears as one mission amongst several which, to my mind, misses the point that this way of thinking should be at the core of our mission and that, were we to take this truly to heart we’d be organizing with enterprise and livelihood as a primary dynamic instead of which we are looking more and more like a non-profit every day.

  3. The several issues that Naomi and Phillip have flagged up for attention in the #common_ground Slack channel are not resolved as yet and how they are resolved will directly influence the mission and aims.

  4. The notion of developing an epistemic community, another key thread to coherence is just about present but has also been diluted beyond recognition.

Hi Andrew - if the intention is to block, then looks like we need to go back to the editing and review the doc before going ahead with a vote. A future policy will explicitly deal with patrix - but no problem to add in here too - can you suggest a wording? Enterprise is in there, again, what would you change in the text? please make suggestions as soon as possible - happy to discuss on Friday / Saturday too
