Let's decide on our toolset

DB Doug Belshaw Public Seen by 292

Came up with this over breakfast. On reflection, I want things to 'just work' more than show that the hair shirt isn't that irritating.

So let's have a discussion about whether we want to use the following tools when communicating with:

Each other
* Email
* Loomio
* Slack
* Trello

Community
* Twitter
* Slack
* TinyLetter
* Medium

Clients
* Trello
* Email
* Google Docs
* Slack

BONUS QUESTION: Shall we just use Google Apps for email, etc. as well?

I started to write a thing and yes, the "willing to take a bit of a hit" thing felt a bit forced.

Related to wanting people to choose us because we're better not just because we're a co-op.

Pasted the text into a pad so we can build out if desired once we've got agreement - https://weareopen.sandcats.io/shared/p1D9uyD8OkAzZpVJtYR6LgpDa3Nyfg9PQHlJnr1Mxqn

Your list looks good to me.

Just to mix things up a bit, I thought I'd have a bit of a go this morning in configuring Sandstorm.

  1. I've emailed you with instructions on how to authenticate using your Google account and weareopen.coop email address

  2. On a whim, I created http://weareopen.coop/tools

  3. Wildcard DNS is still beyond me, so I suggest we just keep Sandstorm at the sandcats.io domain

If we decided to go with WeKan and Rocket.Chat, that would change things to....

Each other

  • Email
  • Loomio
  • Rocket.Chat
  • WeKan

Community

  • Twitter
  • Rocket.Chat
  • TinyLetter (for newsletters; there's self-hosted options, though)
  • Medium (syndicated from our own blogs)

  • Etherpad
  • Rocket.Chat

What are people's thoughts on that?

FWIW At the moment I'm relying on email to notify me of when I need to sign into Loomio or another App. Usually, I would say "Let's select tools we already use on a daily basis because, you know, CPU and stuff."

I read John's etherpad and thought about the fact that not only am I comfortable playing with technology, but I get a kick out of experimenting. I like the list. Let's get it set up.

I'm on holiday, happy for you to make this decision without me :beach_with_umbrella:

Agree with some of the proposal, don't have a strong opinion on some things one way or the other.

Agree with some of the proposal, don't have a strong opinion on some things one way or the other, disagree with others. Plus Doug made fun of me for Abstaining.

Wondering whether we're realistically all going to use Rocket.Chat.

We probably would if we stopped using Slack...

I haven't responded as yet because:
1. I'm a bit useless
2. I'm not sure how to respond. I'm not sure we need to define our toolset - as I don't know how good they'll be until I try them.
I find myself wondering what the purpose is behind this motion. For instance, is it to say to new members, "use these tools" ?
On the other hand - when it comes to tools, I'm not an early adopter...
