Should the Internet Party stand in the Northland by-election?

DU Maelwryth Public Seen by 131

With the resignation of Mike Sabin as the Northland MP, should the Internet Party stand a candidate in the by-election?

After some more thought, I've changed my mind. Help Labour to win it and stop this government.

I'm agreeing on the basis that the IP needs every opportunity - just make sure the candidate knows what matters/what the 'big issues' are for Northland.

Stand a candidate who campaigns strongly to publicise our policies, and the new look Internet Party, but in the end recommends that Internet Party supporters vote strategically for the candidate most likely to defeat National.

What about stepping back and giving Hone the opportunity? Do we not owe this to him?

@miriammallinder We do owe it to him, but we still need to stand to show that the issues we raised still exist and we weren't just an anti John Key party. We could have a cup of tea with Hone though. That would be humorous in the news. :)

it would indeed Tane ... but I would not like to split the vote again ... why not just give him our support in some way? Let's face it, his political movement is more mature than ours ... we will have our day, so long as we keep at it. We need leadership and all sorts of things, Hone is the leader and has better back up, mana (in the maori sense of the word), reputation, etc ...

I don't particularly support all of his views, and would prefer an internet party candidate, but ... ??? can't we be ethical too??

@miriammallinder Of course we should be ethical. I think however this it getting to far from the initial question.

Before we get any where near deciding our position with Hone we really need to sort out our own. Remember that Hone doesn't stand in Northland, and there didn't appear to be a candidate standing in the Northland seat for Mana-Internet. So maybe Mana wouldn't stand at all. There is also the fact that Mana may not want to be associated with us at all.

Either way, before we get to the Mana bridge, we need to sort out our own problems and it seems to me that a decision needs to be made as to whether we stand in Northland, lick our wounds until the next general election, or fold entirely as a movement.

It has been over four months since the general election, https://internet.org.nz/ hasn't been updated since then and the internal forums have been shut down, you can't even log in as a member. Laila has resigned and gone on a pilgrimage, KDC seems to have lost all his fire, the executive are mostly silent with the only recent updates I have had on the situation coming from @fredlook.

We need to get back up, pull ourselves back together, and fight for the things we believe in to be given a voice. Fight for what we believe is right.

We came up with some decent policy for the last election ( https://internet.org.nz/policies ) but the really interesting stuff happened on Loomio. Over the course of a couple of months, people had over 400 discussions and so much possible policy was generated that has never ever seen the light of day in "normal" political parties.

We got shut down because we were a threat. Hone got ousted by National and Labour who exploited one of our weaknesses. KDC was another. But, at one point at least, Hone (an experienced politician) believed that this party could make a difference to such an extent that he leveraged us by placing his own party at risk. KDC believed in the idea enough that he sank millions of dollars into us.

Nothing has changed. We are still in the same worsening situation because every day the current system continues, more assets are sold, more laws are repealed or changed. Every day we slip closer to a NZ we don't want.

Nice post Tane ... and very true. Where are we without Laila and KDC? We need leadership. I don't have what it takes, do you? How do we achieve this??

The person who stands in Northland will be our leader for all intents and purposes ... so the question is, if we stand in Northland who will stand?

I agree, the policy incubator was genius. We need it.
