Canvassing Resource 馃幐

Here is a diagram of good canvassing ideas and methods. Thanks to Gia of d@w-Miami she deserves all the credit for making this. I would like to use this as a starting point in brainstorming and formalizing (standardizing) d@w campaign methodologies. I think Branding is important for our cause and am already thinking of beer can coolers etc. that would "market" the D@W brand. We want to "reach" the working class and burn our image and purpose into their minds. This diagram gets me thinking that we as as "business" should look into adopting various "corporate" strategies in order to be more efficient as an organization, more efficiently move our cause down the road and compete in an environment where people understand this particular language. In other words, take what works in the business world, fits our coop model and use it to our advantage. What makes corporations and some political orgs so successful is they are "organized". This chart gets me thinking how being organized will help us create a fine tuned machine that is low maintenance and extremely effective.

All of these things are great possibilities, but should they be first step priorities?

So this is very much the traditional model where a few leaders have ideas and push forward these ideas. Others feel there are better ways to move forward. The group starts off already divided into segments that have different voices. Often this quickly leads to confusion leaving potential new followers questioning the groups organization when they take a quick look at it.

But now imagine an adopted solution with a tool where everyone with equal power creates a single voice. Then everyone knows exactly who this group is and what their combined priorities are. And if I join I will immediately be an equal. Much more clarity this way. Less chaos as group grows and grows. If you join then you know immediately what's most important to do to help - even if it is not your priorities. You can find your way to action more easily as a group member vs. an independent supporter.

It's a whole new progressive approach. Maybe just that thing to help brand and stand out among all others in the world.

Don't stop working. Just try to start bringing comm prioritization into the group. We can do this right now within Loomio with its proposal tool. It will be kind of clunky, but it's doable. The one thing we absolutely need is a single reference of prioritized group decisions. NOT decisions by a few. Everyone must feel they are an equal within this reference.

If we can organize this way then this group will grow and grow.

This is just a suggestion and was uploaded because I find it important. Food for thought. Imo, campaigning and PR should be where most of our effort and time is spent - taking action that results in non-supporters becoming supporters.

Imagine a very simple and fun first ask of any potential new member or follower of this coop initiative. All they need do is create a stand place in a virtual parallel coop world. Don't focus on physical world constraints like geography, culture or language. Instead employ the psychographics (values, beliefs, preferences, opinions, interests, etc.) of people. Allow each unique individual to be themselves vs. needing to work to fit into a static structure we create for them.

So it works like this:

  1. Rank-order (prioritize) a list of psychographic concepts with an emphasis on creating your unique top-10 list.

  2. Your top 10 gets placed on a virtual activists sign that your coop avatar carries with it all around the coop world.

  3. You are free to explore anyplace in this world, but you MUST declare a home position.

  4. The only objective of this initial ask is to establish your home base stand point.

  5. Anyone can join an existing community or create a new coop community at any time.

  6. To create a new community all you need do is connect with another coop world member and suggest creating a new community together.

  7. The only objects that exist in this world (at this level of engagement) are the signs, so these signs of prioritized psychographics are the focus.

  8. The solution has a very simple exploration dashboard for navigating the world and making your standpoint. It allows you to search for either individuals or communities that match search query criteria you specify. Again all based on one or more concept position(s) on the signs.

  9. Communities also have signs which are automatically created based on combining all members signs within the community.

  10. So you explore and you establish a home inside or outside communities.

  11. The physical structure of this world is that everyone who participates stands within a single 3D sphere. Any community becomes a new sphere within this single larger sphere. (It may help you to imagine all communities as spheres and all individuals as cubes.)

  12. Community spheres can also exist within any other community sphere and these can go to any inner depth.

The fun comes as the coop world gathers together more and more members and EVERYONE gets to understand how people react and position themselves in this sort of world. At any moment in time:

  • How many persons are independent (not within any community)?
  • How deep do communities go?
  • What's the most popular community?
  • How many members exist within your community?
  • How many sub-communities exist within your community?
  • Etc etc

This "ask" does not ask a lot of anyone first coming to this coop world. It's just a simple and fun initial experience within an ever-changing world, so there's compelling reason to keep coming back to see how the world is changing. Plus as the world changes you most likely will find yourself changing with it. You might need to keep moving your standpoint.

I have some web-based demo software that creates this world structuring. It's really crude and used for a different application, but it does begin to paint the picture. Happy to share though I will warn you now much of it requires a walk thru - as it makes sense to me but probably not 99% of browsers.

My point here is to suggest we focus on initially launching with a simple ask vs. here's our very complex way of trying to change the world.

The best thing about this tool is it begins to logically put together like-minded persons who will be able to work together in more harmony because they think much the same way psychographically. IMHO geography and demographics are a terrible way to structure communities in the world.
