Proposals of fixed duration (group option)

Hi,
I am an active member of several communities which use loomio to make decisions. They all have rules about proposal duration, which are hard or time consuming to enforce manually (and authors of proposals very often set a wrong date). So I think it would be cool if we had a group option which would make the proposal duration fixed! So the group coordinators set the option to X days (according to the rules which the group has given to itself), and then when a member creates a proposal, there would be no choice about the closing date. Instead, the closing date would be displayed for information (its value would be current date + X days). I have attached 2 images showing how it could be displayed. It does not seem too hard to implement, so maybe I will try to do it :) But first I wanted your ideas about it! For example, is it enough to set duration in days only, or should it be more precise (for example 1 month, 2 days, 3 hours, 27 minutes)?

Hum, sorry for the fast wireframes: the new option would not display in the "What can members do?" section, but maybe in a new section of the Permissions tab. Or we could formulate it differently, for example "Set the proposal closing date, instead of using the X default", but it is probably less clear.

@quentingrimaud interesting idea! Would you see this as a truly fixed time frame, or just setting the default for the timeframe, which could be changed if needed?

Truly fixed, on the 2nd screenshot the current date picker is replaced by an informative sentence.

Sounds good I wonder if duration should be in hours rather than days?

I like this idea - and really love the way you've described it from specific experience @quentingrimaud :)

Personally I would prefer setting a default, rather than a fixed time. Like this:

I tend to agree about setting a default... the truth is the software is never going to fully be able to control what people do, and it shouldn't try to. It's always going to be up to groups to set their own rules, norms, and culture. The software can provide helpful tools to support that.

How about both? We would have the "By default, proposals are open for" row as shown by @Richard D. Bartlett, and in the "What can member do?" section, we would have a check box for "Set any proposal closing date" or "Choose the closing date of their proposals"

It would be nice to indeed have default duration that could be defined by the coordinators of the groups.

How about adding a checkbox
"Override the proposals default duration" under the section "What members can do?"

This way coordinators could decide the default duration for their(s) group(s) and they can decide if the members can change it or not.
