Ruby user groups
I sent an email this week to my local Ruby User Group's mailing list asking for volunteers to help with D development, and got a developer out of it. I'd encourage others to do the same. You can find your local group at this site:

Hello Bristol Ruby hackers,
I'm working with the core team on the Diaspora project to try and get more developers involved so we can speed things up a bit
I'm not a programmer (apart from a bit of dabbling in PHP) but I think its a great project and really worth getting behind, and I become more and more keen on it the more annoying facebook gets
Would any of you be interested in getting involved? You don't have to commit much time, there are a few small improvements that you could work on if you wanted to get involved.

I thank this mailing list was for french people, but although it is not the case, my message can interest you.
I am a student in engineering school and i contribute to the Mozilla and the Diaspora project. I subscribed on this list to talk to you about Diaspora, a social network free, decentralized and aware of privacy. Since August, it is the community who drive the project. A lot of work is done, but there is not enough contributor. This is the purpose of my message.
Diaspora is developed using Ruby, Ruby on Rails, and Backbone.js. I would like to know if some of you would be interested to be involved. If you are a teacher, this could be a very good subject for your students. Fix a bug is a really great experience : they will learn how a FOSS project work, how to use git and github, how write and run tests... Or you could want to add some social interactions in your company and integrate a Diaspora server can be a good idea.

I am really proud to say that only few hours after this message, I already have two positives answers : Yasin and Imran Nazir.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any directly in my vicinity. I might try and outreach to any Chicago-based ones soon.

The Helsinki Ruby Brigade is having a meeting this month - I'm trying to gather courage to go there :D Maybe I could do a short presentation at some point to them.

Great stuff Robin - really encouraging and we should definitely try to get the word to local Ruby communities - suggest everyone takes an action point if there is a local group! I'm going to be in contact with the Helsinki group definitely.
